General information, not legal advice. This page sets out how the law generally applies. It does not take account of your circumstances, and you should get advice about your own situation before acting on it. The official sources this page is written from are listed on it; where they differ from anything here, they are the authority.
No. You can apply yourself, or use a registered migration agent or an Australian legal practitioner. Legal advice is most valuable when your circumstances are complex, you have had a refusal, or the cost of getting it wrong is high.
What is the difference between a migration agent and an immigration lawyer?
Both can give immigration assistance. Immigration lawyers are Australian legal practitioners who can also advise on related legal issues and represent you in court. Registered migration agents are regulated by the Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority.
How long will my visa take?
Processing times vary by visa type and change over time. The Department of Home Affairs publishes indicative processing times, and we will talk through realistic timeframes for your application.
Is my information kept confidential?
Yes. As a law practice we are bound by professional duties of confidentiality and by Australian privacy law. Our privacy policy explains how we handle your information.
Where this sits
One decision at a time
A visa matter is rarely one question. It is a sequence: what was applied for, what the Department decided, what the decision record actually says, and what can still be done about it and by when.
Working out which step you are on is usually the first useful thing, because it decides everything after it.
